feel good hit of the summer
2002-08-30 [ 02:36 am ]
Every summer for me has a soundtrack, songs which become identifiable for the rest of my life. Everytime I hear these songs, I will think of summer 2002:
Dave Matthews Band - Where Are You Going?
It started out making me think about travelling, and then some friends of mine broke up, and she really liked that song. I began to notice the carefully repressed heartache behind the lyrics.
Well, then I broke up, so now this song reminds me, of, well, the usual things...
Smashing Pumpkins - Thirty Three
It was just last week... Passing out under a table, really confused about the world, really hating X-Box.
After the clubs, 102.1 plays the oddest collection of music; their usual trite hits, and d-level singles from the mid nineties... stuff like Sarah McLachlan and Collective Soul which isn't "edgy" enough for the daytime.
Anyway, it's hard to explain.
The Strokes - Hard To Explain
It sounds kind of like it was mixed with a Casio keyboard, but I really love this song. It reminds me of driving with Kim, dancing in the Kwik Mart, and wishing that MY name was Julian Casablancas.
Our Lady Peace - Somewhere Out There
I told Dustin when this came out in the spring that it sounds like the kind of song that is anthemic for summer.
Now this song reminds me of telling Dustin that this song may be anthemic for the summer.
Marilyn Manson - The Last Day On Earth
Well this one is hard to explain, too, but it involves my brother and a van on my other brother's wedding day.
It goes deeper than that, rooted in grade nine, that one time he happened to pick me up at school, and changed my musical tastes forever.
Night Ranger - Sister Christian
I miss the rock epic, the trashy ballad. It won't remind me of anything in specific (besides that scene from Boogie Nights)...
Sanford & Son TV Theme Song
Well, I hum this to myself all the time, and it pumps me up... I can think of at least a dozen places where it pops in my head... and it all started one night in St. Catharines when I realized that "Trash Of The Titans" is perhaps my favourite Simpsons episode ever...
---
Well, well, a ragtag bunch of songs, but then again it has been a ragtag summer. Who knows what the next one brings...
